Five Common Road Hazards

700 × 449
When encountering a road hazard, it can be difficult to figure out how to maintain control, which is why our dealers at A.M. Maus and Son are here to help. To help you prepare for unpredictable dangers on the road, we've identified the five most common road hazards and how you can protect yourself.

  • Malfunctioning Traffic Lights: When functioning properly, traffic lights keep cars flowing smoothly and help prevent collisions. However, a malfunctioning traffic light could lead to a traffic jam or a head-on collision, so if you encounter a faulty traffic light, treat the intersection like a four-way stop and allow the other cars around you to go one by one.
  • Construction Zones: Construction sites can be dangerous due to high levels of activity, reduced speed limits, and redirecting traffic, so it's best to avoid them whenever possible. If you find yourself in a traffic jam near a construction zone, pay close attention to the cars around you and be prepared to yield for any workers.
  • Road Debris: Whether you encounter litter, animals, or items that have fallen out of other vehicles, it's always best to be on the lookout for road debris. Try to switch lanes if you can't avoid large pieces of debris, so you don't damage your vehicle.
  • Children: If you’re driving near a school zone or playground, it's important to always watch out for small children playing near the road. Be prepared to stop at a moment's notice, in case they wander into the road unexpectedly.
  • Reckless Drivers: Some of the most dangerous road hazards are negligent drivers, and they're also the hardest to avoid. Always be aware of how nearby motorists are driving, and if you notice one driving recklessly, try to distance yourself as far away as possible. If need be, pull over to the side of the road to let them pass.
