If you're interested in a new pickup truck, you probably want to make sure that it can tow. And if you are new to towing in your truck, then you're going to need a towing guide for that new RAM pickup. A.M. Maus and Son can help you with that. Here are some terms that you need to know.
Towing Capacity
This is perhaps the most important term to know. This refers to how much your vehicle can tow when properly equipped. Trying to go over that limit can cause expensive damage to many parts of your vehicle, from the engine to the tires, and create major safety issues.
Gross Vehicle Ratings
These ratings refer to how much weight your truck can handle in total. The Gross Combined Weight Rating, or GCWR, includes the weight of the vehicle itself, the passengers, the cargo in the bed, and whatever is being towed. The Gross Axle Weight Rating, or GAWR, refers to the maximum weight that the front and rear axles can handle.
Going over either of these weight ratings can cause damage, so knowing exactly what you are transporting with your truck is key.
Trailer Hitch Class
There are five hitch classes, with higher classes being able to handle more weight. A Class I hitch can tow up to 2,000 pounds, while a Class V hitch can handle up to 17,000 pounds.
There are also gooseneck and fifth-wheel hitches that do not fit into any of these classes. These are each rated by their own maximum weight, and that limit should never be exceeded.
