Some drivers ask us “Do car batteries expire?' and the answer is yes, they do have a finite lifespan. Here are some signs that it's time to visit A.M. Maus and Son and ask about a new battery.
1. Difficulty Starting Your Car
Since your battery provides the charge needed to start your vehicle, one sign of trouble is that you're having trouble starting up your car. If starts are sluggish or starting your vehicle takes multiple attempts, then this could be a battery problem.
2. Dim Headlights
Your battery also provides power to the electrical systems in your car, and that includes your lights. If your headlights are dimmer than usual and struggling to light the way forward, that may be the sign of battery issues.
3. Check Engine Light is On
Sometimes the check engine light will turn on due to a battery problem. If you've determined that other mechanical issues are not the culprit, your dashboard light might be on because your battery is struggling to do its job.
4. A Swollen or Bloated Battery Case
If you notice that your battery case is swollen, that could be a sign of battery issues. The battery case may have expanded due to excess heat, so this is something to look out for in the summer months. This could lead to liquid evaporation, corrosion, and an inability to hold a charge.
5. The Age of the Battery
If your battery is a few years old, it's wise to have a mechanic take a look at it when your car is in the shop. Batteries generally last three to five years, so if you're approaching that mark be vigilant about your battery health.
